A TEAM of Kenyan investors recently visited Teso region to conduct a survey on the defunct Soroti Meat Packers factory. The team wanted to determine the viability of setting up a fruit processing plant in the defunct meat factory premises. Led by Rakesh Pant, the MADA Holdings group financial controller, the delegation also toured other potential locations in the area.

TWO new chick-pea varieties will be commercially available for planting in southeast Australia this year. AWB Seeds has seed of the desi chick pea PBA slasher available for the first time. And Australian Agricultural Crop Technology is selling seed of the small kabuli type, genesis 079, through satellite groups of farmers.

It is important that farmers know their seed quality this year, especially the germination percentage   -Wayne Hawthorne

Recent heavy rains that moved through the Bay area has caused significant damage to strawberry farms. Gary Wishnatzki, president of Wish Farms in Plant City, says too much water can be bad for strawberry plants. "The plant will actually soak up the water from the roots," says Wishnatski.

My bus trip back to Acre began in the state of Sao Paulo and would set the tone for the days to come. Here, I picked fruits from the garden of the Leite family. The calabura fruit tasted like the marshmallows in Lucky Charms cereal, another like strawberry-lemonade bubble gum.

As the Extension Service actively promotes consumption of fruit and vegetables to enhance health and longevity, and because no fruit or vegetable can be fresher than that which you produce yourself, I found this source of fruit to be particularly satisfying. Following the prolonged cold snap north central Florida experienced this year from early to mid-January, several people who know I have citrus — and, OK, I admit it — a few palms I shouldn't have, inquired whether I had lost any trees.
